Hugo Ribeiro holds a BSc and an MSc in Environmental Sciences from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Biogeochemistry and Environmental Remediation) from the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS), University of Porto. His research focuses on environmental microbiology, biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, and environmental remediation. He participated in several national and international research projects and has authored 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles, as well as book chapters and conference proceedings, in the fields of environmental biotechnology and microbial ecology. He has also presented his research at numerous international scientific conferences through oral and poster communications.
He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Thessaly, Greece, where his research focused on biological nitrification inhibitors (BNIs). His work investigated plant-derived compounds that suppress nitrification and their effects on ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms, aiming to develop sustainable solutions for nitrogen management in agricultural systems.
