Sofia Tsaloumi

Postdoctoral Researcher

Sofia Tsaloumi holds a BSc and Integrated Master’s degree in Food Science and Technology, as well as an MSc in Food Science, from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She completed her Ph.D. in February 2024 in the Department of Food Science and Technology, working at the Laboratory of Food Microbiology and Hygiene under the supervision of Prof. Konstantinos Koutsoumanis. Her doctoral research focused on the application of Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment and predictive microbiology tools to food spoilage. Her dissertation, entitled “Development and Application of Stochastic Models for the Spoilage of Foods of Animal Origin”, involved the development of mathematical and stochastic models to predict spoilage dynamics and support food safety and quality management. Throughout her research career, she has participated in several European and nationally funded projects, with a primary focus on food microbiology, predictive microbiology, and risk assessment. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Plant & Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory, she contributed to the development of innovative methodologies for the risk assessment of low-concern active substances within the European project “Fit-for-purpose and Innovative Risk Assessment for Low-Concern Pesticide Active Substances and Uses”. She has authored 8 peer-reviewed scientific publications (h-index: 5, citations: 157) and has presented her research at national and international scientific conferences through 15 oral and poster presentations.
